Thora Birch

Thora Birch, born March 11 1982, is an American actress. Her film debut was in Purple People Eater (1988) which earned her the Young Artist Award for "Best Young Actress under Nine Years of Age". Birch was a child star who appeared in films like All I Want For Christmas (1991) and Patriot Games(1992), Hocus Pocus (1993), Monkey Trouble (94), Now and Then (1995) as well as Alaska (1996). The actress received a Young Artistic Award in the category of "Best Young Actress Under Nine Years Old." In 1999, Birch played Jane Burnham in American Beauty. This film brought her a BAFTA nomination. Then, she starred as Enid in the critically acclaimed Ghost World (2001), winning a nomination for Golden Globe for Best Actress. Birch was also nominated for an Emmy Award for her performance in Homeless To Harvard: The Liz Murray Story in 2003. Other films she has appeared in include Dungeons & Dragons (2000), The Hole (2001), Silver City (2004), Dark Corners (2006), Winter of Frozen Dreams (2009) and Petunia (2012).After taking time off from acting Birch resumed her career in the year 2016 and since then has appeared in a number of independent films. Birch was also the Whisperer Mary/Gamma during season 10 of The Walking Dead (2019-202). Birch was the eldest child born to Jack Birch (and Carol Connors) in Los Angeles. Birch is of German-Jewish, Scandinavian and French-Canadian in her ancestry.  The name Thora, which she has adopted, is an abbreviation of Thora, the Norse god of thunder and lightning ("Thor"), which could be her name had she had been a child. Kian Bolt Birch is her younger brother. Both of her parents had roles in adult films , and also appeared in Deep Throat. Based on their own experiences working in the entertainment industry it was difficult for them initially to support Thora. However, Thora's photograph was viewed by agents when a babysitter watched her mimic commercials. Birch got her first big break at the age four, when the babysitter took her to a successful audition for a Quaker Oats commercial.
