Maureen O'Hara

Maureen FitzSimons (17 August 1920 to 24 October 15th, 2015) was an Irish actor, singer and actor who gained fame in Hollywood during the 1940s through 1960s. Her natural redhead nature was a draw for strong but smart heroines in Westerns and adventure movies. Charles Laughton, an actor who first saw her potential as a star, introduced her to Hollywood. Numerous times, she also worked with John Ford, longtime friend John Wayne and John Ford. O'Hara was born in Dublin, Ireland and was raised Catholically. She was destined from at an early age to be an actor. From the age 10 she studied at the Rathmines Theatre Company and the Abbey Theatre. Screen tests were given to her, but it did not go as well as expected. Charles Laughton, however was able to see potential and agreed to allow her to join him on stage in Alfred Hitchcock’s Jamaica Inn (1939). RKO Pictures offered her a contract. The actress also moved to Hollywood in 1939 to appear alongside Hitchcock in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. In the years following, she enjoyed a long and successful career. She was often referred to as "the Queen Of Technicolor". Her films comprise How Green Was My Valley (1941), her first film with John Ford, The Black Swan (1942), The Spanish Main (1945), Sinbad the Sailor (47), the Christmas classic Miracle on 34th Street (1947) as well as Comanche Territory (1950). (1963), Big Jake (1971). A lot of people believed that Wayne and O'Hara were either in an affair or were married because of their strong rapport. She became more motherly as she grew older appearing in films such as The Deadly Companions (1961) as well as The Parent Trap(61) and The Rare Breed (1966). She resigned from the business in 1971, only to return 20 years later to appear in a film with John Candy in Only the Lonely (1991).
